I believe it is better I don’t talk about any individual player. We are ready to spend the money we have. It’s not my money. It’s important to spend .

The Gunners were hooted from the pitch at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, after losing 4-3 to Liverpool in their opening Premier League game of the season.

With captain Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista injured and Laurent Koscielny still regaining fitness following Euro 2016, Wenger was forced to select 20-year-old Rob Holding alongside 21-year-old Calum Chambers at the heart of Arsenal’s defense.

Wenger refused to provide an update on Arsenal’s reported move for Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi with Sky sources understanding the player has agreed to join Arsenal, but the clubs have yet to finalist a fee.

When asked about the deal, Wenger said: “I believe it is better I don’t talk about any individual player. We are ready to spend the money we have. It’s not my money. It’s important to spend to money right way.

“When Wenger was asked if conceding four goals at home against Liverpool has increased the urgency for Arsenal to sign a center-half, he said: “It was important before the game. You do not sign players because you think it’s very important or not.

“I think it’s very difficult to find players and identify them. That’s why everyone is on the market for the same players and the deals.” Continue reading “RIO OLYMPICS: Arsene Wenger says Arsenal are ‘willing to spend’ In Transfer Window”

Hernandez-Harrison, 22, of Washington, D.C., and LaManna, 24, of Millville, New Jersey, will meet in a scheduled 10-round fight on Sept. 15 in the main event of a CBS Sports Net-televised card at the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia, organizers proclaim on Monday. “Chief Don’t Run,” the latest single from the supposedly forthcoming LP Long Live the Chief, is not steampunk dancehall, but it does feature some vocal processing and a mildly compelling grind of a beat. This isn’t peak Jidenna, but it is more Jidenna, and it’s good to know the Chief is still in business. Hail to him.

RIO OLYMPICS: Usain Bolt wins 200m semifinal heat.

usain bolt

RIO DE JANEIRO — It’s no easy thing to push Usain Bolt, even in an Olympic warm-up race.

It might be even tougher to upstage him.

Some of Wednesday night’s most entertaining theater came, as usual, from the Jamaican star, who smiled and wagged his finger at a brash up-and-comer while winning his 200-meter semifinals heat. Bolt will go for his eighth Olympic gold in the final on Thursday.

Bolt’s main goal during the opening rounds is to conserve energy, which is exactly what he was doing when he looked to his right, saw Canada’s Andre de Grasse a few steps behind him and put it on cruise control.

The only problem was, de Grasse, the bronze medalist in the 100, didn’t back down. He sped up, caught up and suddenly, the two were nose-to-nose, peering and smiling at each other down the stretch. Bolt finished in 19.78 to win by a scant .02 seconds. He wagged his finger at de Grasse as they crossed the line.

“That was really unnecessary,” Bolt said. “I don’t know what he was trying to do. He’s a young kid. He’s great. In fact, he has a lot of talent. I’m looking forward to the competition in the final.” Continue reading “RIO OLYMPICS: Usain Bolt wins 200m semifinal heat.”

TEAM: USA’s Sue Bird day-to-day with knee sprain

usa birds  RIO DE JANEIRO — Sue Bird and the U.S. women’s basketball team received some good news Wednesday when an MRI revealed that the team captain and point guard has a knee capsule sprain.

Bird had initially feared the injury would be much worse.

“Obviously I felt a huge relief,” Bird said in a statement provided by USA Basketball. “The hardest part is waiting and not knowing. So, to finally get the thumbs-up from the doc that everything was okay was incredibly relieving and exciting, and obviously I’m very happy.”

Bird wasn’t at practice on Wednesday and is listed as day-to-day. She has little time to recover before the U.S. faces France in the semifinals on Thursday night. With a win, the U.S. would advance to the gold medal game on Saturday.

Bird has started every game for the U.S. in the past three Olympics and has 30 assists and just three turnovers in Rio. The Americans were preparing at practice as if she couldn’t go against France.

“You don’t replace Sue. We all know that,” guard Diana Taurasi said. “Been on too many teams with her and I know how valuable she is to a team. Our success is because she’s been the quarterback. She’s the director of it all. To say we’re not going to miss her … would be silly. Continue reading “TEAM: USA’s Sue Bird day-to-day with knee sprain”
