Rio 2016: Boomers slam Lithuania in basketball quarter-final on Day 12

Australian basketball star Andrew Bogut has pinpointed an unexpected reason for the team’s dazzling form at the Rio Olympics: financial security.

The 31-year-old veteran is in his third Olympic campaign and says the current Boomers squad is benefiting from having players who are not trying to attract or shore up contracts with their professional league clubs.

“It sounds silly, but it works wonders,” he said after the Boomers thrashed the world’s number 3 ranked side, Lithuania (90-64), to reach their first Olympic semi-final in 16 years.

“I have been part of national teams where guys come in, and they don’t have a contract in Europe or Australia or America and they are trying to prove themselves in an Olympics individually and they are happy to get their numbers,” he said.

RIYAD MAHREZ: The Liecester City Player Signs New Deal.

Riyad Mahrez has ended speculation linking him with a move away from Leicester City by signing a new four-year deal. Although having been strongly linked with Arsenal in the current window, the Algerian PFA Players’ Player of the Year will remain at the champions after penning an extension.

The reigning PFA Player of the Year had been tipped to join Arsenal this summer, although interest had recently cooled, and he has now committed himself to the Foxes until 2020. This make the club could not hide their delight at tying down their “magician” for four more seasons.

“Leicester City Football Club is delighted to announce that Riyad Mahrez has signed a new contract, committing his future to the Foxes until June, 2020,” the club’s statement reads.

“The reigning PFA Players’ Player of the Year signs new terms after playing a starring role in City’s unforgettable Premier League title triumph last season – the latest stage of a remarkable journey for the 25-year-old Algerian in Leicester City colours.

“Signed from Le Havre of the French second tier in January 2014, Riyad’s two-and-a-half-year spell with Leicester has seen him establish himself as an Algeria international, a Premier League champion and one of the most feared attacking players in Europe. He scored 17 goals and contributed 11 assists last season in the most remarkable title triumph in Premier League history.”

TRANSFER RUMOUR: Barcelona Have Interest In PSG Goalkeeper Alphonse Areola

Barcelona are reportedly interested in PSG’s goalkeeper Alphonse Areola to replace Claudio Bravo.

Spanish publication Sport have claimed that Barcelona are looking at PSG goalkeeper Alphonse Areola as a potential replacement for Claudio Bravo, who is close to signing for Manchester City. The report stated that Barcelona are looking for alternatives to the Chilean and that the club are considering the French U-20 international to be the understudy to German international Marc Andre-Ter Stegen.

Ex-commissioner arrested over $12m fraud.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has intensified its probe of the immediate past Governor of Ebonyi State, Martin Elechi, over some alleged fraudulent contracts approved by his government.

Earlier in the year, the EFCC had received a series of petitions against Elechi’s government, causing the commission to invite the ex-governor and his son, Nnanna.

In continuation of the probe, the EFCC arrested a former Commissioner for Public Utilities in the state, Mr. Benjamin Okah, for his alleged role in a $12m contract awarded to a United States-based firm, Califco Group, in 2012.

In a statement by its spokesman, Mr. Wilson uwujaren, that the state government paid $10.8m to the firm in 2012 as mobilisation fee but the project was abandoned.

“The Dream Team VI are playing well just need to further up their game given the quality of opposition.

“They must attack and make sure they recover quite well to fence off the expected counter attack from the Germans.

“They must observe past mistakes especially the errors that caused them the game against Colombia and make sure it does not repeat itself against Germany.

“Our chances are bright to overcome the German hurdle.”
